Winds (Graduate)

Bassoon

Pre-screening requirement: All graduate wind applicants are required to submit a pre-screening CD along with their other application materials. Selections should include three contrasting pieces or movements from different major style periods. Only CD recordings will be reviewed; other media-types will not be considered. Submitted recordings will remain property of the University of Illinois School of Music and will not be returned. Please label your CD with your name and "Prescreening Bassoon".

Audition Requirements: Prospective students should prepare the following: Mozart Bassoon Concerto in B flat, KV191 - first and second movements, with cadenzas; a 20th century work from the standard solo repertoire, and 2-3 standard orchestral excerpts of your choice. Applicants should also be prepared to perform major and harmonic minor scales (preferably full range), chromatic scale (preferably full range), and sight read.

Clarinet

Pre-screening requirement: All graduate wind applicants are required to submit a pre-screening CD along with their other application materials. Selections should include three contrasting pieces or movements from different major style periods. Only CD recordings will be reviewed; other media-types will not be considered. Submitted recordings will remain property of the University of Illinois School of Music and will not be returned. Please label your CD with your name and "Prescreening Clarinet".

Audition Requirements: Prospective M.M. and D.M.A. students should prepare thirty minutes of music, including repertory that demonstrates diversity of styles, time periods, and forms (sonatas, concerti, orchestral excerpts, and studies). Sight reading will also be required.

Flute

Pre-screening requirement: All graduate wind applicants are required to submit a pre-screening CD along with their other application materials. Selections should include three contrasting pieces or movements from different major style periods. Only CD recordings will be reviewed; other media-types will not be considered. Submitted recordings will remain property of the University of Illinois School of Music and will not be returned. Please label your CD with your name and "Prescreening Flute".

Audition Requirements: Applicants for the M.M. degree should prepare a recital program equivalent to a B.M. performance degree recital. Applicants for the D.M.A. degree should prepare a recital program equivalent to a M.M. performance degree recital. Repertoire selected should represent at least three of the major style periods. In addition, applicants should be prepared to sight read, and prepare the following orchestral excerpts:

• Beethoven, Overture to Leonore Nr. 3
• Mendelssohn, Scherzo from a Midsummer Night's Dream
• Ravel, Daphnis and Chloe
• Brahms, Symphony Nr. 4
• Hindemith, Symphonic Metamorphosis

Oboe

Saxophone

Submitted recordings will remain property of the University of Illinois School of Music and will not be returned. Please label your CD with your name and "Prescreening Saxophone".

Audition Requirements: Applicants for the M.M. degree should prepare a recital program equivalent to a B.M. performance degree recital. Applicants for the D.M.A. degree should prepare a recital program equivalent to a M.M. performance degree recital (piano accompaniment is not required). Applicants should also be prepared to perform major and harmonic minor scales (full range) and sight read. Applicants with jazz training are encouraged to also audition for the jazz faculty for possible assistantship consideration in the jazz division.
