Winds (Undergraduate)
Bassoon
Prospective students will be evaluated on their skills of tone production, intonation, musicality, lyrical phrasing, rhythmic accuracy, technical proficiency, sight reading, and overall musical experience. The student will be asked to perform:
- Two or more contrasting movements from the standard solo repertoire (an etude is acceptable for one of these) that demonstrate lyrical phrasing and technical proficiency
- All major scales and chromatic scale (at least two octaves, preferably full range)
- Sight reading
Clarinet
Prospective students will be evaluated on their skills of tone production, intonation, musicality, lyrical phrasing, rhythmic accuracy, technical proficiency, sight reading, and overall musical experience. The student will be asked to perform:
- Two or more contrasting movements from solo repertoire, sonata or concerto, or etudes, demonstrating lyrical phrasing and technical proficiency
- Major scales through three sharps and three flats; chromatic scale (at least two octaves, preferably full range)
- Sight reading
Flute
Prospective students will be evaluated on their skills of tone production, intonation, musicality, lyrical phrasing, rhythmic accuracy, technical proficiency, sight reading, and overall musical experience. The student will be asked to perform:
- Three or more contrasting movements from solo, sonata, or concerto repertoire, demonstrating lyrical phrasing and technical proficiency
- All major scales (two octaves); three examples of harmonic and three examples of melodic minor scales (two octaves), and a chromatic scale from C1 to C4
- Sight reading
Oboe
Prospective students will be evaluated on their skills of tone production, intonation, musicality, lyrical phrasing, rhythmic accuracy, technical proficiency, sight reading, and overall musical experience. The student will be asked to perform:
- A Barret Grand Study or Ferling Etude; two contrasting movements of a baroque sonata or concerto; one movement or selection from the standard oboe literature
- All major scales; chromatic scale (at least two octaves, preferably full range)
- Sight reading
Saxophone
Prospective students will be evaluated on their skills of tone production, intonation, musicality, lyrical phrasing, rhythmic accuracy, technical proficiency, sight reading, and overall musical experience. The student will be asked to perform:
- Two or more contrasting movements from solo, sonata, or concerto repertoire, demonstrating lyrical phrasing and technical proficiency.
- All major scales (two octaves) and chromatic scale (at least two octaves, preferably full range)
- Sight reading
