Auditions for a Jazz Ensemble:

Big Band, Combo, Latin Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Trombone Ensemble, Jazz Saxophone Ensemble

AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS



All jazz ensembles are by audition only and open to all students, including music majors other than jazz majors, and to non-music majors.

Special Note: NO JAZZ CLASSES WILL MEET AUGUST 25-27 DUE TO JAZZ AUDITIONS! All jazz ensembles and jazz classes will meet at their regularly scheduled times starting Thursday, August 28th. THE IMPROVISATIONAL PERFORMANCE FORUM WILL MEET ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 29 AT 12 NOON IN SMITH HALL ROOM 25. ALL JAZZ MAJORS MUST ATTEND!!!

Auditions for all jazz ensembles are held the first two days of class each instructional periods (Fall and Spring semesters, Summer Session II. Exceptions may be made by individual jazz studio professors from semester to semester, so always check with your particular instrument or voice professor as to specific audition time/places information listed below. Also, please note that information concerning auditions is posted on the bulletin boards outside Smith Hall Room 11 (in the SMH basement) two days before classes begin.

First, sign-up - then audition. The results of the auditions will be posted on the bulletin boards outside Smith Hall Room 11 by 12:00 midnight on Wednesday, August 27.

The audition consists of sight-reading jazz charts, improvising on a blues in the key of your choice, and improvising on one of these jazz standards: “All The Things You Are” in Ab, “Just Friends” in F or G, or “Stella By Starlight” in Bb. For drummers, be prepared to play various grooves and rudiments. EVERYONE should be prepared to do sight-reading.

Special Instructions for Saxophonists:
1) All SAXOPHONISTS go to Smith Memorial Hall Room 5-E (Professor McNeill). Contact Professor McNeill for further details.
2) On the sign-up sheet outside Room 5-E, please give your full name and a local phone number/e-mail where you can be reached.
3) The audition will consist of sight-reading some jazz charts and any improvisation you wish to do.
4) The results of the auditions will be posted on the bulletin board outside of Smith Memorial Hall Room 11 by 12:00 midnight on Wednesday, August 27th.

Special Instructions for Brass:
1) All TRUMPETS go to Smith Memorial Hall Room 5-C (Professor Carrillo). Contact Professor Carrillo for further details. All TROMBONES go to Smith Memorial Hall Room 5-D (Professor Pugh). Contact Professor Pugh for further details.
2) On the sign-up sheet outside the specific office in which you are auditioning, please give your full name, your instrument, and a local phone number/email where you can be reached.
3) The audition will consist of sight-reading some jazz charts and any improvisation you wish to do.
4) The results of the auditions will be posted on on the bulletin board outside Smith Memorial Hall Room 11 by 12:00 midnight on Wednesday, August 27th.

Special instructions for Piano/Bass/Guitar:
1. All PIANISTS/GUITARISTS go to Smith Memorial Hall Room 108 (Professor Stephens). Contact Professor Stephens for further details. All BASSISTS go to Smith Memorial Hall Room 101 (Professor Gray). Contact Professor Gray for further details.
2) On the sign-up sheet outside the specific office in which you are auditioning, please give your full name, your instrument, and a local phone number/email where you can be reached.
3) The audition will consist of sight-reading some jazz charts and improvising on one of these jazz standards: “All The Things You Are” in Ab, “Just Friends” in F or G, and “Stella By Starlight” in Bb. Guitarists and bassists need to bring your own amp for the audition (small one please).
4) The results of the auditions will be posted on the bulletin board outside of Smith Hall Room 11 by 12:00 midnight on Wednesday, August 27.

Special instructions for Drums/Percussion:
1. All DRUMMERS go to Smith Memorial Hall Room 2 (Professor Hall). Contact Professor Hall Professor Hall for further details.
2) On the sign-up sheet outside the specific office in which you are auditioning, please give your full name and list your instrument along with a local phone number/email where you can be reached.
3) The audition will consist of sight-reading some jazz charts, playing various grooves/time, and any improvisation you wish to do.
4) The results of the auditions will be posted on the bulletin board outside of Smith Memorial Hall Room 11 by 12:00 midnight on Wednesday, August 27th.

ADVISING
Professor McNeill will be available to advise jazz saxophone students and students who are not sure who their adviser is in the area of jazz studies at the following times in his office in Smith Memorial Hall (Room 5-E):

Tue 8/21 10am-12noon and 1pm-4 pm


There will be a sign-up sheet (on a first-come, first-served basis) on his office door for advising.

For all jazz students who know who their adviser is (usually your jazz studio applied teacher) please contact them individually for advising times/places.
