John Wagstaff

Associate Professor of Library Administration and Music Librarian

B.A. in Music, University of Reading, UK; M.M. in Historical Musicology from King's College, University of London; Diploma in Librarianship, Polytechnic of North London.

John Wagstaff began his library career at King's College, University of London, moving from the music library there in 1988 to take up the position of Music Faculty Librarian at the University of Oxford, UK. He has worked at UIUC since January 2005. He is a member of the Music Library Association and of the International Association of Music Libraries (IAML), Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (UK) and American Library Association, and the American Musicological Society and Royal Musical Association (UK). His bio-bibliography of French composer Andre Messager (Greenwood Press, 1991) reflects his long-standing interest in French music, and he was also editor of the second edition of the British Union Catalogue of Music Periodicals (Ashgate, 1998). He has contributed many reviews to such journals as Notes, Fontes artis musicae (of which he was also editor up until 2004), and Music & Letters. He contributed articles to the New Grove Dictionary of Opera (Macmillan, 1992) and articles on Charles Burney and Sir John Hawkins to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. He is also active as a music librarianship educator.
